Unlike store-bought cards, free ecards can be selected and sent straight from your home computer, and the whole process takes only a few moments. Most ecards are also animated, which means that with all but the oldest working computers, ecards will play a short cartoon, along with displaying their greeting message. Some of these animations are funny, while others are sentimental and earnest. As soon as you hit the homepage, you’ll see plenty of options from the get-go. Popular and timely cards are prominently displayed, or you can browse different categories—from birthdays to holidays, graduations to general friendship cards—using the menu on the right of the page. Pick your favorite card, and click on it.
Now you’ll be taken to a preview of the card you’ve selected. Just push “play,” watch the animation, and make sure it’s the card for you. If you’re satisfied, scroll down to the bottom of the page. Here, you’ll find the dialog boxes to type in the important information needed to send your card out, such as the recipient’s e-mail address, and your own personal accompanying message; you can even choose the date, up to a month in advance. Once you’re done, just click the button: “Send this card now.”
You’ll also want to take note of some other services here while you’re browsing, such as birthday reminders, which send you electronic notices when a friend or family member’s birthday is coming up, or photo cards, which allow you to send e-cards using your own personal photos as backdrops.
