Is it more impolite to butcher a language or not speak it when going to a foreign country?
I am sometimes hesitant to use Spanish when I go to spanish speaking places because I feel like it would be insulting to hear how badly I am speaking there language, but I also hear it is bad to not take the time to learn the language. Which one is worse?
If you put in your best effort to speak Spanish and they will understand. Tell them when you first meet them that your Spanish isn’t perfect, and they will be happy that you are atleast making an effort. I agree with second answerer, I have heard that some French speakers, in Paris, can be condescending if you try to speak French with them, but those are the same ones who will blow you off if you try to speak English with them.
