A Day For The Girls in NY?

I`ve heard of ‘A Girls Day Out’ but never actually had one and I`m 20 now so it`s about time. My sisters 17th birthday is in December and she hasn`t ever been to NY so that our destination spot. Need alittle help with the planning:
- Taking the subway (best way to get from Hamilton NJ to NY)
- Want to try a spa out (how much do regular spa packages cost nowadays? and whats the best spa experience you`ve had?)
- We each got gift cards so we need to do a bit of shopping at least (what`s the best stores to shop at for our age group and not too expensive?)
- Always wanted to see a show on Broadway but I have no idea what`s playing? My sister wants to see something called Spring Awakening? Anyone seen it? Ad how much do Broadway tickets cost? Buy online ahead of time or there at the theater?
- Grand total that we`d probably end up spending after all that? Any other sites we should see while we`re out there?

Thanks for your answers! :)

Hamilton, NJ isn’t too far from NYC as I recall. (I’ve actually been to Hamilton once and I think it was about 1 1/2 hours away.) Take a train into Grand Central Station where you can pick up the subway to anyplace you want to go. Grand Central is really nice now so you may even want to spend a few minutes looking around. If you’re only going to NYC for one day and want to see a Broadway show, you may want to buy tickets ahead of time even tho it’s a lot more money. But here are your choices:

1. You can go to the TKTS line for discounted tickets to almost all shows. It’s located around the Marriott Marquis near Broadway and 46th Street. You can only buy tickets for shows that day and you must pay cash or traveller’s checks. The line starts moving at 3 pm for shows at 8 pm that evening, but you’ll want to get there early. The tickets will be half to a third off the regular price. But you’ll spend a couple hours on line.

2. Go to the box office of the show you want to see and buy direct. You’ll pay full price. but won’t have to wait as long.

Tickets range from about $45 to $120 per person full price depending on what seats you want. A number of shows closed recently, but Spring Awakening is still playing I think at the O’Neill Theatre at 230 West 49th Street at 8th Avenue. The theater’s probably dark on Tuesdays. Probably a good pick for your age group and got good reviews. A Chorus Line is a classic you might like. Mamma Mia is fun if you find disco amusing. Xanadu opened recently which you might like. For more info, check out www.tdf.org. or the Village Voice which is free. To get to the theater district from Grand Central, just take the 7 or S subway train cross town.

If I only had a day in NYC at your age, I guess I’d probably do some shopping in the west Village. Lots of cool places to check out. From Grand Central, it would probably be easiest to take the 7 cross town to Port Authority and transfer to the A, C, or E downstown to get to the vicinity of West 4th Street.

Can’t help you with spa packages, but check out the Village Voice or New York magazine on line–they may have some advertisements of places you’d like.

Have fun:)
